Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Pace per km = total finish time (min) ÷ 5. Speed = 60 ÷ pace. Multiply by 1.609 to convert to per-mile and mph. For example, a 25-minute 5K gives a 5:00/km pace, 12 km/h speed, and an 8:03 per-mile pace. Split times are evenly spaced at that pace.

Formula
Pace (min/km) = total time (min) ÷ 5 • Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace • Pace (min/mi) = pace × 1.609344
How this is calculated

A 5K (five kilometres) is one of the most common race distances for beginner and experienced runners alike. This calculator divides your total finish time in minutes by 5 to give your average pace in minutes per kilometre — the most useful figure for training and pacing future runs.

The pace per mile is obtained by multiplying the km pace by 1.609344, the exact conversion factor from kilometres to miles. Speed in km/h inverts the pace: 60 minutes divided by the pace in min/km gives how many kilometres you covered each hour. Speed in mph then follows by dividing km/h by 1.609344.

The split-time bar shows the cumulative elapsed time at each of the five kilometre marks assuming a perfectly even pace — a helpful reference for even-effort race strategy. In reality, many runners go out slightly fast in the first kilometre and slow in the last; the table gives a par time to compare against a GPS watch. All calculations assume a flat 5,000-metre course with no wind adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Most beginners finish a 5K in 30–40 minutes, corresponding to paces of 6:00–8:00 min/km. Any finishing time improves with consistent training — the most important benchmark is your own progress over time.

Divide 60 by your pace in min/km. For example, a 5:00 min/km pace equals 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. This calculator shows the conversion automatically.

Multiply your min/km pace by 1.609344 (the number of kilometres in one mile). A 5:00/km pace equals 5 × 1.609 ≈ 8:03 per mile.
