Absolute change is the signed arithmetic difference between a new value and an original (reference) value: New − Old. A positive result signals an increase; a negative result signals a decrease. The term "absolute" here refers to the net numerical shift — not the mathematical absolute value — though both are reported.

Percentage change expresses the same shift relative to the size of the original: (New − Old) ÷ |Old| × 100. Dividing by |Old| (the magnitude of the original, not the signed original) ensures the sign stays consistent even when the original is negative. When the original is zero, percentage change is mathematically undefined — any nonzero new value represents an infinite relative change.
