How does this calculator work?

Acceptance rate = (accepted ÷ applied) × 100%. Divide accepted applicants by total applicants and multiply by 100 to get the percentage. The rejection rate is the complement. For 150 accepted out of 1000 applicants, the acceptance rate is 15% and the odds against are 5.67:1.

How this is calculated

The acceptance rate is simply the proportion of successful applicants expressed as a percentage: rate = (accepted / applied) × 100. If a university received 1000 applications and offered 150 places, the acceptance rate is 15%. The rejection rate is the complement: 100% − acceptance rate.

The "odds against acceptance" puts this in ratio form: for every person accepted, how many were rejected? With a 15% acceptance rate (150 accepted, 850 rejected), the odds are 850:150 ≈ 5.7:1 against — meaning roughly six people compete for every one place.

Acceptance rates are widely cited for universities (Ivy League schools typically range from 3–12%), competitive job applications, grant proposals, and selective programmes. Comparing rates across institutions only makes sense if the applicant pools are similar in quality — a highly selective school that discourages weak applicants may have a higher rate than one that encourages everyone to apply.

It depends on selectivity goals. Highly selective universities (MIT, Stanford, Ivy League) have rates of 3–12%. Moderately selective schools are 20–50%. Open-access institutions may accept 70–100% of applicants. A "good" rate depends entirely on the institution's mission.

Acceptance rate is the share of applicants offered a place. Yield rate is the share of accepted students who then enrol. A school with a 20% acceptance rate and a 40% yield would enrol 40% of those it accepted.

No — the number accepted cannot exceed the number who applied. The calculator shows a warning if accepted > applied. Rates close to 100% simply mean almost all applicants are offered a place.
