AUDIT Calculator — Full 10-Question Alcohol Use Test
The AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) is the WHO-validated 10-question screening tool used worldwide to identify hazardous, harmful, and possibly dependent alcohol use. Answer all 10 questions to get your score (0–40) and see which risk zone and intervention are indicated.
Q1 — How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?
Q2 — How many standard drinks on a typical drinking day?
Q3 — How often do you have 6 or more drinks on one occasion?
Q4 — How often have you found you were unable to stop drinking once you had started?
Q5 — How often have you failed to do what was expected of you because of drinking?
Q6 — How often have you needed a first drink in the morning after a heavy session?
Q7 — How often have you had a feeling of guilt or remorse after drinking?
Q8 — How often have you been unable to remember the night before because of drinking?
Q9 — Have you or someone else been injured as a result of your drinking?
Q10 — Has a relative, doctor, or other health worker been concerned about your drinking?

How does this calculator work?
The full AUDIT scores 10 questions (each 0–4, total 0–40) covering alcohol consumption, dependence signs, and harm. Zones: 0–7 low risk, 8–15 hazardous (simple advice), 16–19 harmful (brief counselling), 20–40 possible dependence (specialist referral). This is a screening tool — a high score warrants professional assessment, not a self-diagnosis.
Formula
How this is calculated
The AUDIT was developed by the World Health Organization in the 1980s and has been validated across more than 40 countries. Questions 1–3 cover consumption (frequency, quantity, and binge frequency) and form the AUDIT-C subscale. Questions 4–6 cover dependence symptoms (inability to stop, failing obligations, morning drinking). Questions 7–10 cover alcohol-related harm (guilt, blackouts, injury, concern from others).
Each question is scored 0–4, except Q9 and Q10 which use 0, 2, or 4. The maximum total is 40. WHO guidelines map scores to four risk zones with corresponding interventions: Zone I (0–7) — no intervention needed beyond routine advice; Zone II (8–15) — simple structured advice; Zone III (16–19) — brief counselling and monitoring; Zone IV (20–40) — referral to a specialist for further evaluation and possible treatment.
The AUDIT is a screen, not a diagnostic instrument. Many factors affect an individual's risk, and a high score should prompt a full clinical assessment. Q9 and Q10 use asymmetric scoring (0/2/4) because even a single alcohol-related injury or professional concern is considered clinically significant regardless of frequency.
Frequently asked questions
The AUDIT-C uses only the first three questions (Q1–Q3) and scores 0–12. It is faster and easier to administer but focuses exclusively on consumption pattern. The full 10-question AUDIT (0–40) additionally screens for dependence symptoms and alcohol-related harm, giving a more complete clinical picture.
A score of 8 or above crosses into the hazardous-use zone and warrants at least a brief conversation with a healthcare professional. Scores of 16 and above suggest harmful use or possible dependence and are associated with significant health risk — a clinical assessment is strongly recommended.
The AUDIT was designed to be cross-culturally applicable; however, a "standard drink" varies between countries (typically 10–14 g of pure alcohol). The scoring thresholds were validated primarily in European and North American populations. Some regional guidelines adjust the positive-screen cutpoint slightly. The WHO recommends training clinicians to interpret scores in the local context.
