How does this calculator work?
Multiply per-child costs (supplies, clothing, activity fees) by the number of children, add a shared electronics budget, then add daily lunch cost × days × children. Two children with $120 in supplies, $200 in clothing, $250 electronics, $150 activities, and $5 lunch for 180 days comes to roughly $2,700 total per year.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator sums five spending categories. Per-child costs (supplies, clothing, activity fees) are multiplied by the number of children you enter. Electronics is treated as a shared one-time purchase regardless of how many children you have. School lunch costs are multiplied by both the number of children and the number of school days in the year.
All dollar amounts are editable — the defaults are rough US national averages from recent years (supplies ≈ $120/child, clothing ≈ $200/child, school lunch ≈ $5/day) but adjust them to your actual store or region. The total represents your expected out-of-pocket cost for a single academic year.
The donut chart breaks the total into its five categories so you can see where the budget is concentrated and decide where to prioritise savings — for example by packing lunches rather than buying at school, or sharing electronics between siblings.
Frequently asked questions
The National Retail Federation reports that US families with K–12 children typically spend around $850–$900 per year on back-to-school items when including clothing, supplies, electronics, and fees. Costs vary widely by grade level, school district, and whether electronics are shared or new.
Yes — school lunches are a significant recurring cost that is easy to underestimate. At $5/day for 180 school days, a single child adds $900 to your annual budget. Packing lunch from home can cut this by 60–70% and is worth considering alongside the upfront supply and clothing costs.
Buy supplies during tax-free weekends (available in many US states in August), shop at discount retailers, buy second-hand clothing and gently used electronics, and reuse items from the previous year where possible. Many schools also provide supply lists — buying only listed items prevents over-spending on things that are not actually needed.
