Ballistic Coefficient Calculator — G1 BC & Sectional Density

Find the G1 ballistic coefficient of any bullet by entering its mass in grains, caliber diameter in inches, and G1 form factor. BC quantifies how efficiently a bullet overcomes air resistance — a higher BC means a flatter trajectory and less wind drift at long range.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

G1 BC = Sectional Density ÷ Form Factor, where SD = bullet_mass_lb ÷ diameter_in². Convert grains to pounds by dividing by 7000. Typical values: 0.1–0.2 for pistol bullets, 0.3–0.45 for hunting rifle bullets, 0.5–0.65 for long-range match bullets. Higher BC means flatter trajectory and less wind drift.

Formula
BC = SD / i • SD = m_lb / d_in² • m_lb = mass_grains / 7000
How this is calculated

The G1 ballistic coefficient is the ratio of a bullet's sectional density to its form factor. Sectional density (SD) is the bullet's mass in pounds divided by the square of its diameter in inches — it measures how much mass is packed behind each unit of frontal area. A heavier, narrower bullet therefore has a higher SD and, all else equal, a higher BC.

The form factor (i) compares the bullet's actual aerodynamic shape to the G1 reference projectile, a flat-based spitzer designed in the 19th century. A value below 1 means the bullet is more aerodynamic than that reference; above 1 means less. Flat-base spitzers typically have i ≈ 1.0, boat-tails around 0.9, and round-nose or pistol bullets 1.4–1.6. Modern very-low-drag (VLD) boat-tail bullets can reach i ≈ 0.7–0.85, yielding a BC well above what SD alone would suggest.

Because the G1 model was designed for flat-base bullet shapes, long-range shooters increasingly prefer the G7 drag function for modern boat-tail bullets — G7 BCs are more consistent across velocity ranges. G1 BC is still the most widely reported figure on ammunition boxes and remains useful for comparison. Typical G1 BC ranges: pistol and round-nose rifle bullets 0.1–0.2, hunting spitzers 0.25–0.4, long-range match bullets 0.4–0.65, and extreme-range competition bullets up to 0.75+.

Frequently asked questions

For hunting at moderate ranges, a BC above 0.3 is adequate. For long-range work (500–1000 yards), aim for 0.45–0.65 G1. Modern precision-rifle competition bullets often exceed 0.6 G1. Pistol bullets are typically 0.1–0.2.

G1 and G7 refer to different reference projectiles used to model drag. G1 is a flat-base spitzer and overestimates drag at supersonic speeds for modern boat-tail bullets, so its BC varies with velocity. G7 uses a boat-tail reference that matches modern long-range bullets more accurately, giving a more consistent BC — but G1 is still more widely published.

Sectional density (mass ÷ diameter²) is the foundation for BC. Two bullets with the same SD but different aerodynamic shapes will have different BCs because their form factors differ. Improving shape (lower i) raises BC even when SD stays constant.
