The calculation is based on the landmark Ding et al. 2016 meta-analysis published in PLOS Medicine, which synthesised data from multiple large cohort studies covering over 1 million adults. The reference point is 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity — the WHO minimum recommendation — which is associated with approximately 3.4 years of additional life expectancy compared to a sedentary lifestyle (Lee et al. 2012). The benefit grows with more activity but diminishes (a dose-response curve): the calculator applies a linear scale up to three times the WHO reference level (450 min/week), then caps the gain at the published maximum for each intensity tier.
Intensity matters: vigorous cycling (high heart rate, laboured breathing) produces a greater benefit per minute than light leisure cycling, reflecting a higher metabolic equivalent (MET) value. This calculator uses conservative multipliers (0.7× light, 1.0× moderate, 1.3× vigorous) derived from meta-analytic MET-response data; individual results vary substantially depending on baseline health, genetics and concurrent lifestyle factors.
