How does this calculator work?
Birth year = Reference year − Age (if birthday passed) or Reference year − Age − 1 (if birthday not yet this year). Age 25 in 2026 → born in 2001 or 2000. Without month of birth, both years are valid. Check a passport or birth certificate for the exact year.

How this is calculated
Knowing someone's current age does not uniquely identify their birth year because "age" always refers to the last completed birthday. A person who turns 25 in April and is asked in July "how old are you?" will say 25 — but so will someone born in December who has not yet turned 26. Both people are 25 but were born in different years.
The rule: if your birthday has already passed in the current year, you were born in (current year − age). If your birthday is still coming up later this year, you were born in (current year − age − 1). Without knowing the exact month, both answers are possible.
For most practical purposes — rounding down to the nearest year, verifying a form, estimating a birth decade for genealogy — either year in the range will do. If you need the precise birth year, check your birth certificate, passport, or any identity document that records both birthday and birth year.
Frequently asked questions
"Age" records your last completed birthday, not the exact elapsed time. If you are 25, you could have been born in the current year minus 25 (if your birthday has passed) or the current year minus 26 (if your birthday is still coming up). Without the month and day of birth, both years are valid answers.
Yes — the Reference Year field accepts any year. Enter a historical year to find a birth year from a historical age record. For example, a census from 1900 records someone aged 30 — they were born in 1870 or 1869. This is the same calculation as the Birth Year From Death Date calculator, just using a living age.
Enter your age as a decimal (e.g. 25.5 for 25 years 6 months). The calculator rounds down to the last completed birthday year. For newborns under one year, enter 0 — you would have been born in the reference year (or the year before, if born in December and the current month is January).
