How does this calculator work?

A chord is a stack of semitone intervals above a root. Major = root+4+7; Minor = root+3+7; Dom7 = root+4+7+10; Maj7 = root+4+7+11. Select any root note from C to B and any of the 11 chord types to see every note name and its semitone distance from the root.

How this is calculated

Every chord is built by stacking specific intervals (measured in semitones) above a root note on the chromatic scale. A major chord uses intervals of 0 (root), +4 (major third) and +7 (perfect fifth); a minor chord swaps the major third for a minor third (+3). All chord tones are computed by adding the interval to the root note number (0 = C, 1 = C#, …, 11 = B) and taking the result modulo 12 to stay within one octave.

The 11 chord types in this calculator cover the chords you encounter in most music: three triads (major, minor, diminished), augmented, two sus chords (sus2 and sus4), and five seventh chords (dominant 7th, major 7th, minor 7th, diminished 7th, and half-diminished). The notes are shown in root position — the root is the lowest voice — though in practice the same notes can appear in any order across the instrument's range.

Notes with two names (C# and D♭ are the same pitch) are shown with both names for reference. Which name you use depends on the key you're in: in the key of G major, the note is F#; in the key of D♭ major, the same pitch is G♭. The calculator uses sharps throughout for consistency.

Frequently asked questions

A major chord has intervals root – major 3rd (+4) – perfect 5th (+7). A minor chord has root – minor 3rd (+3) – perfect 5th (+7). The only difference is one semitone in the middle note, which gives the minor chord its darker, sadder sound.

Root position means the lowest-pitched note is the root (the note the chord is named after). When you rearrange the notes so a different chord tone is in the bass, you get an inversion — use the Chord Inversion Calculator to see first and second inversions.

C# and D♭ are enharmonic equivalents — the same piano key, the same guitar fret, but spelled differently depending on the key signature. In G major you'd call it F#; in D♭ major you'd call it G♭. This calculator always uses the sharp spelling for display simplicity.
