How does this calculator work?
Chord transposition shifts each root note on the 12-semitone chromatic scale: new index = (original + n) mod 12. Enter your chord progression (e.g. "C G Am F"), choose the semitone shift (7 = up a fifth, −5 = down a fourth), and get every chord transposed instantly in sharps or flats. Slash chords and all common chord suffixes are preserved.

How this is calculated
The Western chromatic scale has 12 equally spaced semitones per octave. Each note is assigned an index from 0 (C) to 11 (B). Transposing by n semitones adds n to each note's index and wraps around at 12 using modular arithmetic. Positive values shift upward in pitch; negative values shift down; a shift of ±12 lands on the same note name an octave away.
Chord symbols are parsed by extracting the root note — two characters first (to catch sharps and flats such as C#, Db, F#) and then one character — while the chord-quality suffix (m, maj7, sus4, dim, 7, add9…) is left entirely unchanged. Only the root note is transposed. Slash chords (e.g. D/F#) are handled by transposing both the chord root and the bass note independently.
Resulting notes are rendered as sharps (C#, F#…) or flats (Bb, Eb…) depending on your preference. Enharmonic equivalents such as C# and Db sound identical — choose the notation convention that matches your music or the key you are transposing into (keys with sharps conventionally use sharp notation; flat keys use flat notation).
Frequently asked questions
Transposing lets a singer perform a song in a key that suits their vocal range. Guitarists use transposition to apply a capo — for example, playing open-G chord shapes with a capo at fret 2 sounds in A. Shifting by 7 semitones (a perfect fifth) is also common in music production.
One semitone = one fret on a guitar (e.g. C to C#). Common intervals: minor second = 1, major second = 2, minor third = 3, major third = 4, perfect fourth = 5, tritone = 6, perfect fifth = 7, octave = 12. Transposing by +5 is the same as −7 in the other direction.
Convention: keys with more flats in the key signature (F, Bb, Eb, Ab…) use flat notation for accidentals, while keys with sharps (G, D, A, E, B…) use sharps. After transposing, pick the accidental style that matches the resulting key. The sounds are identical — only the spelling differs.
