Round each number to one significant figure, then apply the operation mentally. For division, round the dividend to the nearest multiple of the (rounded) divisor so the result is a whole number. The estimation typically falls within 5–15% of the exact answer and serves as a quick sanity check.

Compatible numbers are a mental-math strategy taught in primary and middle school: instead of working with awkward numbers, choose nearby round numbers that are easy to compute mentally. For multiplication and addition/subtraction, each operand is rounded to one significant figure (the leading digit kept, the rest zeroed). For division the dividend is rounded to the nearest multiple of the divisor (itself rounded to one sig fig), so the quotient is a whole number — for example, 253 ÷ 7 becomes 280 ÷ 7 = 40.
The estimation error shows how far the compatible estimate is from the exact answer as a percentage. Errors under about 10% are typical and perfectly acceptable for estimation purposes. Compatible numbers are not meant to replace exact calculation; they help students quickly check whether an answer is in the right ballpark and develop number sense.
