How does this calculator work?
Margin at finish (s) = time for peloton to finish − time for breakaway to finish. A positive margin means the breakaway survives. Peloton close rate = peloton speed − breakaway speed; divide the gap distance by that rate to find when (and where) the peloton would catch up if the gap closes to zero before the line.

How this is calculated
The key question in any breakaway is whether the gap grows or shrinks as the race progresses toward the finish. The breakaway covers the remaining distance at its own speed; meanwhile the peloton must also close the current physical gap before it can start gaining on the leaders. By calculating the time each group needs to reach the finish line, you can find the margin: a positive number means the breakaway arrives first.
The calculation converts the current time gap into a distance gap (gap_seconds × peloton_speed / 3600), then computes how long each group takes to travel to the line. If the peloton speed exceeds the breakaway speed, the peloton is closing at (peloton_speed − breakaway_speed) km/h; dividing the distance gap by that closing rate gives the time and distance at which the catch would happen — if it happens before the finish, the breakaway fails.
This model assumes both groups maintain constant speeds throughout, which is a simplification: real race dynamics involve fatigue, terrain changes, motivational surges and tactical decisions. Use the calculator as a planning guide, not a precise race prediction.
