Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

The density triangle ρ = m ÷ V solves for any one of three quantities given the other two: density = mass ÷ volume, mass = density × volume, or volume = mass ÷ density. Enter any two values — the calculator rearranges the formula and fills in the third. Results appear in kg/m³, g/cm³, kg, and m³.

Formula
ρ = m ÷ V • m = ρ × V • V = m ÷ ρ
How this is calculated

Density (ρ), mass (m), and volume (V) are linked by a single formula: ρ = m ÷ V. Rearranging gives m = ρ × V and V = m ÷ ρ, so knowing any two immediately determines the third. This calculator reads whichever two fields you fill in and applies the correct rearrangement.

Inputs are in SI units: mass in kilograms, volume in cubic metres, density in kg/m³. To enter a density in g/cm³, multiply by 1 000 (water at 1 g/cm³ = 1 000 kg/m³). Results also appear in g/cm³ and g/mL, which are numerically identical (1 cm³ = 1 mL). A convenient shortcut: 1 litre = 0.001 m³.

The formula assumes uniform density throughout the object — it gives the average bulk density and does not account for internal voids, mixed materials, or composition gradients. Both volume and the computed density must be positive.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply density by volume: m = ρ × V. For example, a 2 m³ block of aluminium (ρ ≈ 2 700 kg/m³) has mass = 2 700 × 2 = 5 400 kg. Leave the mass field blank and the calculator does this automatically.

Divide mass by density: V = m ÷ ρ. For example, 5 kg of water (ρ = 1 000 kg/m³) occupies V = 5 ÷ 1 000 = 0.005 m³ (5 litres). Leave the volume field blank to get the result.

The calculator uses SI base units: mass in kg, volume in m³, density in kg/m³. To convert g/cm³ to kg/m³ multiply by 1 000. To convert litres to m³ divide by 1 000.
