Dog Crate Size Calculator
A properly sized crate should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Enter your dog's length (nose to tail base) and height (floor to top of head while standing) to get the recommended crate length, height, and width.

How does this calculator work?
Add 4 inches to your dog's nose-to-tail length for the crate length, and 4 inches to its standing height for the crate height. Width is roughly two-thirds of the length. The size category (S/M/L/XL) maps to standard wire-crate length tiers used by most pet brands.
Formula
How this is calculated
The standard crate-sizing rule adds 4 inches (roughly 10 cm) of clearance to both the dog's body length and standing height. This gives enough room for the dog to stand fully upright and stretch out without the crate being so large that a puppy treats one end as a bathroom. The width is estimated at about two-thirds of the length, which matches the proportions of most wire and plastic crates on the market.
The size category (Extra Small through XXL) corresponds to the standard crate-length tiers used by most pet brands: up to 22 in = XS, 24 in = S, 30 in = M, 36 in = L, 42 in = XL, 48 in+ = XXL. These are the nominal outside or opening dimensions; always verify the interior floor space against the manufacturer's spec before buying.
For puppies, size the crate for the expected adult dimensions, then use a divider panel to shrink the usable space during house-training. Giant breeds often need a crate measured by weight class rather than body measurements alone — if your dog is over 100 lbs, cross-check with the manufacturer's weight chart.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — buy for the estimated adult size and use an adjustable divider to block off the extra space while house-training. A crate that is too large can let a puppy designate one corner as a toilet, undermining the training.
The sizing formula is the same regardless of type, but interior dimensions can differ for the same nominal size. Always confirm the interior floor measurements on the product listing, especially for plastic airline crates which often run slightly smaller.
General guidance is no more than 4–5 hours for an adult dog and 2–3 hours for a puppy under 6 months. Dogs should not sleep in a crate for more than 8 hours overnight. These figures are not fixed rules — consult a vet or certified trainer for your dog's specific needs.
