How does this calculator work?
Calories per walk = MET × your weight (kg) × hours. A moderate 3 mph walk has a MET of 3.5; two 30-minute walks a day for a 70 kg person burns ~244 kcal and covers ~3 miles daily. Over a year that totals ~730 miles walked and ~89,000 kcal burned.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calorie estimate uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) system from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities. One MET equals approximately 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour — the energy you spend sitting quietly. Walking at around 3 mph carries a MET of roughly 3.5, meaning you burn 3.5 times your resting rate. Multiplying the MET by your weight in kilograms and the walk duration in hours gives the calories burned per walk. Multiply by the number of walks per day to get daily, weekly, and yearly totals.
Distance is calculated from the pace speed and duration: Distance = speed × time. The calculator reports both miles and kilometres for the yearly total. Note that the formula measures the walker's (human) calorie expenditure — your dog's calorie burn depends on its own weight and gait and is not included.
MET values are population averages and assume a flat surface at a steady pace. Real-world burn will vary with terrain, leash-pulling, stopping and sniffing, and individual fitness. The estimate is useful for planning and motivation but should not replace a fitness tracker or medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
A 70 kg person walking at a moderate 3 mph pace for 30 minutes burns about 122 kcal per walk. Two walks a day adds up to roughly 244 kcal/day — around 1,700 kcal a week, comparable to a dedicated workout session.
No — the formula uses your body weight, not your dog's. A large dog that pulls on the lead may increase your effort slightly, but the standard MET model does not account for resistance. Use it as an estimate.
Two 30-minute moderate-pace walks per day amounts to about 730 miles (1,175 km) per year — roughly the distance from London to Rome. Regular dog owners consistently walk more than non-owners in population studies.
