Filter local population by gender, age, attraction, lifestyle, availability and mutual interest — each fraction multiplies. A city of 8 million with 50/20/10/50/50/10% filters gives ~1,000 potential matches. Smaller cities or stricter filters compress this fast. The math is tongue-in-cheek but reveals why meaningful relationships require both patience and openness.

How this is calculated
The Drake equation for love (popularised in various forms, most notably by mathematician Peter Backus's 2010 paper "Why I Don't Have a Girlfriend") applies multiplicative filtering logic — identical to Frank Drake's astrobiology equation — to estimate romantic prospects. Starting with your city's population, each factor winnows the pool: gender or sexual orientation match, preferred age bracket, physical attraction, lifestyle or value compatibility, whether they are currently single, and the probability that the attraction is mutual.
Because the factors multiply, small fractions compound rapidly. A city of 8 million filtered to 50% × 20% × 10% × 50% × 50% × 10% yields roughly 1,000 potential matches — a number that sounds promising in a large city but falls to near zero in a small town or with stricter filters. Doubling any single criterion can double the total result.
This is an intentionally playful statistical framework, not a scientific study. Factors such as "finds attractive" and "lifestyle compatible" are highly personal estimates and vary by individual experience. The real insight the math offers: compatible partners exist, but the joint probability of every criterion aligning simultaneously is naturally low, which explains why meaningful relationships take time and deliberate effort to find.

A result below 1 does not mean no one compatible exists — it means your criteria are very specific relative to your local pool. Try widening the search area, relaxing some criteria slightly, or recognising that "compatible" is often a spectrum rather than a binary pass/fail.
