About this calculator
Electricity is billed per kilowatt-hour (kWh) — the energy of a 1,000-watt device running for one hour. To find an appliance's consumption, convert its wattage to kilowatts (divide by 1,000), multiply by the hours it runs each day, then by the number of days. Multiplying that energy by your tariff gives the cost over the period.
Look for the wattage on the appliance's rating label or in its manual. Devices with heating elements or motors — heaters, ovens, air conditioners, kettles — draw the most and dominate a bill, while electronics on standby still sip small amounts continuously. Comparing the kWh of different appliances reveals where your money actually goes.
