How this is calculated

Two ratios are equivalent when they represent the same relative size — the same proportion of one quantity to another. A ratio a:b is equivalent to (a×k):(b×k) for any non-zero integer k, because multiplying both parts by k is the same as multiplying by k/k = 1.

To simplify a ratio to its lowest terms, divide both parts by their greatest common divisor (GCD). The GCD is the largest integer that divides both a and b exactly. After division, the two parts share no common factor greater than 1 and the ratio cannot be simplified further. For example, 12:8 simplifies to 3:2 (GCD = 4), and 3:2 = 9:6 = 12:8 = 15:10 (all equivalent).

The ratio a:b can also be written as the fraction a/b, so ratio equivalence is the same concept as fraction equivalence.
