How does this calculator work?
FFMI = lean mass (kg) / height² (m²), where lean mass = weight × (1 − fat fraction). Normalised FFMI adjusts to a 1.8 m reference height: nFFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height_m). Natural males typically fall 18–25 nFFMI; above 25 is statistically rare without performance-enhancing drugs. Women's scale runs roughly 5 units lower.

How this is calculated
FFMI quantifies muscle mass relative to body size by dividing fat-free (lean) mass in kilograms by height in metres squared — analogous to BMI but for lean tissue. Lean mass = total body weight × (1 − body fat fraction). Because taller people have longer bones and proportionally larger lean mass even without extra muscle, the normalised FFMI corrects for height by projecting each individual to a standard 1.80 m reference height: nFFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height_m). This normalisation was proposed by Kouri et al. (1995) and validated by Schumacher et al. (2002).
Kouri et al. analysed elite natural and drug-using athletes and found that normalised FFMI values above ~25 were essentially absent in athletes who had never used anabolic steroids, while confirmed steroid users clustered above 25. This creates a commonly cited "natural limit" — though it is a population observation, not a hard ceiling: rare individuals may exceed 25 without drug use, and precise body fat measurement errors propagate directly into FFMI.
Accuracy depends entirely on the body fat input. DEXA and BodPod are the gold standards; skinfold callipers and Navy tape method introduce more error. A 3% error in body fat at 80 kg shifts lean mass by 2.4 kg and FFMI by about 0.8 units — enough to move between categories.
Frequently asked questions
BMI divides total weight by height squared, regardless of body composition. FFMI divides only the lean (muscle + bone + organ) mass by height squared, and requires a body fat measurement. FFMI is a better indicator of muscularity because it strips out the fat component — a heavy but fat person may have a high BMI but a low FFMI.
Not impossible, but very rare in the general population. Kouri et al. found no confirmed non-users above ~25 in their sample. However, population outliers exist, and measurement error in body fat can inflate FFMI. Treat the 25-threshold as a strong statistical observation, not an absolute rule.
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) and air-displacement plethysmography (BodPod) have the lowest error (1–3%). Multi-site skinfold callipers can approach 3–5% in trained hands. BIA (bioelectrical impedance) varies widely with hydration — error of 3–8% is common, introducing up to 1–2 FFMI unit uncertainty at a typical body weight.
