Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Divide the numerator by the denominator: Decimal = N ÷ D. Multiply by 100 for the percentage. The fraction simplifies by dividing both parts by their GCD. If the simplified denominator's only prime factors are 2 and 5, the decimal terminates; otherwise it repeats.

Formula
Decimal = Numerator ÷ Denominator • Percentage = Decimal × 100
How this is calculated

Converting a fraction to a decimal is simply long division: divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Multiplying the decimal by 100 gives the percentage equivalent (75%). The calculator also simplifies the fraction by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor (GCD) using the Euclidean algorithm.

A decimal is terminating if the simplified denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5 — because our number system is base-10 (= 2 × 5). All other fractions produce repeating decimals; for instance, 1/3 = 0.333… This calculator shows the decimal rounded to 10 places for repeating cases.

When the absolute value of the numerator is larger than or equal to the denominator, the calculator also displays the mixed-number form (whole part + proper fraction remainder), useful for cooking, measurement and everyday maths.

Frequently asked questions

5 ÷ 8 = 0.625. Because 8 = 2³ has only 2 as a prime factor, the decimal terminates exactly.

After simplifying the fraction, look at the denominator. If its only prime factors are 2 and 5, the decimal terminates. Any other prime factor (3, 7, 11…) causes the decimal to repeat.

A mixed number combines a whole part and a proper fraction — for example, 7/3 = 2 and 1/3, written 2⅓. This form is often easier to read in everyday contexts than an improper fraction.
