How does this calculator work?
Futures P&L = (exit − entry) × contract size × number of contracts. Notional = entry price × size × contracts. Initial margin is a fraction of notional (set by the exchange). Leverage = notional ÷ margin. A 5% margin rate on a $250k notional position gives 20× leverage — a 1% price move becomes a 20% gain or loss on capital.

How this is calculated
A futures contract obligates the buyer or seller to transact a standardised quantity of an underlying asset at an agreed price on a future date. The contract's notional value at entry equals the futures price times the contract multiplier (or size) — for example, one E-mini S&P 500 contract with a $5,000 index price and a 50× multiplier has a $250,000 notional value. Multiplying by the number of contracts gives total notional exposure.
Profit or loss is determined by the price move multiplied by the contract size: P&L per contract = (exit price − entry price) × contract size. A long position profits when the exit is above entry; a short position is the mirror image. Exchanges require traders to post initial margin — a fraction of notional, typically 3–10% for index futures — so leverage can be substantial. If the price moves against you, variation margin calls may require depositing additional funds.
The margin rate in this calculator is an editable estimate — actual initial margin requirements are set by exchanges (CME, ICE, etc.) and vary by contract, time, and broker. They change frequently with volatility. Return on margin is the P&L divided by margin posted, illustrating the amplified gain or loss relative to capital deployed. Always check your broker's current margin schedule before trading.

Initial margin is the deposit required to open a futures position. Variation margin (or daily mark-to-market) is the daily cash settlement of gains and losses — profits are credited and losses are debited each day. If your account falls below the maintenance margin level, a margin call requires you to top up.
The multiplier converts the futures price into a dollar notional value. For example, a crude oil futures contract has a 1,000-barrel multiplier, so a $1 move in price equals a $1,000 gain or loss per contract. Always check the contract specification for the exact multiplier.
The P&L formula is universal, but margin rates, multipliers, and tick sizes differ by contract and exchange. Use the actual contract specification from the exchange (e.g. CME Group contract details) and your broker's current margin table for precise figures.
