How does this calculator work?
At 3 mL per dose, a 500 mL bottle gives ~167 applications. For DIY: V_alcohol = (target%/stock%) × batch size; fill the rest with water or aloe. Target 70–80% alcohol for optimal germ-killing. Supply formula: bottles/month = users/day × 30 / (bottle mL / dose mL).

How this is calculated
The CDC recommends using at least 3 mL of hand sanitizer per application, rubbed in for 20 seconds to cover all hand surfaces. Supply planning divides the bottle volume by the dose volume to get doses per bottle, then multiplies by the user count to project daily and monthly consumption. The annual cost estimate helps budget for a facility or household.
For DIY sanitizer, the key formula is the dilution equation C₁V₁ = C₂V₂, rearranged to find the volume of stock alcohol needed: V₁ = (C₂/C₁) × V_batch. The remainder of the batch is filled with a diluent — typically distilled water, though aloe vera gel is commonly added for skin conditioning. The WHO recommends a final concentration of 75–80% ethanol or 60–80% isopropanol as optimal for microbial kill; below 60% effectiveness drops sharply and above 90% evaporation is too fast for full contact time.
Note: DIY hand sanitizer should follow validated WHO or CDC formulations. Home-made sanitizer is not a substitute for hand washing with soap and water where available, and incorrect concentrations may be ineffective or skin-irritating.

The CDC recommends approximately 3 mL (roughly a palmful, or enough to cover all hand surfaces) per application, rubbed in for at least 20 seconds until dry. Less than 1.5 mL may leave parts of the hand uncovered.
Rubbing alcohol sold as 70% isopropyl is already within the effective range, but it lacks moisturisers and may be harsh with frequent use. For repeated use, mixing with 1–3% glycerol (glycerine) as a skin conditioner is recommended by the WHO.
