Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

A hollow cylinder's volume is V = π × h × (R² − r²), where R is the outer radius, r is the inner radius, and h is the height. Its total surface area is 2π(R + r)h + 2π(R² − r²), covering the outer face, inner face, and both ring-shaped ends. Enter all three dimensions to get the result instantly.

Formula
V = π × h × (R² − r²) • SA = 2π(R + r)h + 2π(R² − r²)
How this is calculated

A hollow cylinder — also called a cylindrical shell, pipe, or annular cylinder — is a solid cylinder with a smaller coaxial cylinder removed from its centre. The volume equals the outer cylinder volume minus the inner cylinder volume: V = π·R²·h − π·r²·h = π·h·(R² − r²), where R is the outer radius, r is the inner radius, and h is the height. All three inputs must use the same length unit.

The surface area has five components: the outer lateral face (2πRh), the inner lateral face (2πrh), and two annular (ring-shaped) top and bottom faces totalling 2π(R² − r²). The total surface area is therefore 2π(R + r)h + 2π(R² − r²). Setting r = 0 recovers the solid cylinder formulas: V = πR²h and SA = 2πRh + 2πR².

The calculator requires R > 0, h > 0, and 0 ≤ r < R. Wall thickness is simply R − r. These formulas apply to any consistent unit system — centimetres, metres, millimetres or inches — and are exact for geometric (ideal) cylinders.

Frequently asked questions

Volume = π × h × (R² − r²), where R is the outer radius, r is the inner radius, and h is the height. This equals the outer cylinder volume minus the inner cylinder volume.

Wall thickness equals the outer radius minus the inner radius (R − r). For a pipe with outer radius 10 cm and inner radius 6 cm, the wall thickness is 4 cm.

Yes — set the inner radius r to 0. The formula then reduces to V = π × h × R², which is the standard solid cylinder volume.
