A light-year is the distance light travels in one Julian year (365.25 days) in a vacuum. Using the exact speed of light c = 299,792,458 m/s, one light-year equals exactly 9,460,730,472,580.8 km. The calculator multiplies any input by the appropriate conversion factor derived from this definition.
