Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Liquid net worth = liquid assets (cash, savings, stocks) minus liquid liabilities (credit cards, short-term loans). It shows how much money you can access in a financial emergency without selling property or waiting for long-term investments to mature. Aim to cover 3–6 months of expenses.

Formula
Liquid Net Worth = Liquid Assets − Liquid Liabilities
How this is calculated

Liquid assets are resources you can convert into cash within a short time — typically a few days — without significant loss of value. This includes physical cash, balances in checking and savings accounts, money market funds, and publicly traded stocks or ETFs that can be sold on any trading day. Short-term government bonds (T-bills, treasury notes under one year) and accounts receivable due imminently also count.

Liquid liabilities are debts payable in the near term: credit card balances, overdrafts, personal loans due within 12 months, and open lines of credit. Subtracting these from liquid assets gives your liquid net worth — the amount you could realistically marshal in a financial emergency without selling a home or waiting for pension vesting.

The liquidity ratio (liquid assets ÷ liquid liabilities) shows how many times over your liquid assets cover your short-term obligations. A ratio above 1 means you can meet all current obligations from liquid resources alone. A negative liquid net worth — even if total net worth is positive — is a warning sign that a short-term income disruption could create a cash-flow crisis despite significant long-term wealth (for example, equity locked up in property).

Frequently asked questions

Total net worth includes all assets (home equity, retirement accounts, business interests, collectibles) minus all liabilities (mortgage, student loans). Liquid net worth only counts assets that can be converted to cash within days and liabilities due in the near term, making it a more conservative and immediately actionable measure of financial health.

Typically no. Pension or 401k accounts are illiquid (subject to tax penalties and redemption delays) and serve a long-term purpose. Some financial advisors include a Roth IRA contribution portion (not earnings) since contributions can be withdrawn penalty-free; use your judgement and add it to "other liquid assets" if applicable.

Financial advisors usually recommend holding liquid assets equivalent to 3–6 months of essential living expenses as an emergency fund. Beyond that, the ideal liquid net worth depends on your income stability, goals, and risk tolerance — keeping too much in low-yield cash has an opportunity cost.
