How does this calculator work?
Lunar months lived = days alive ÷ 29.530 588. A lunar year = 12 synodic months ≈ 354.37 days — 11 days shorter than a solar year, so you accumulate lunar birthdays faster. At 30 solar years you have lived about 371 lunar months (≈ 30.9 lunar years). Traditional Chinese lunar age ≈ solar years + 1.
Formula
How this is calculated
The synodic month — the time between two successive new moons — is 29.530 588 days on average. Twelve synodic months form a lunar year of about 354.37 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the 365.25-day solar (Gregorian) year. To find your lunar age, this calculator divides the number of days you have been alive by the synodic month length to get total lunar months, then divides by 12 to get whole lunar years plus a remainder.
Note that the synodic month varies slightly (between about 29.27 and 29.83 days) because the Moon's orbit is elliptical and the Earth-Moon-Sun geometry changes. The mean value of 29.530 588 days used here averages out these variations and gives results accurate to within a day or two over an entire lifetime.
The traditional Chinese lunar age (虚岁, xūsuì) counts everyone as age 1 at birth and increments on each Lunar New Year, not on each birthday. This calculator approximates it as the number of complete lunar years lived plus one — which is close but not exact, because the true Chinese reckoning depends on the actual lunisolar calendar dates. For the precise traditional age you would need to know the current and birth Lunar New Year dates.
Frequently asked questions
A lunar (synodic) month is the time between two successive new moons — on average 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds (29.530 588 days). It is the basis of lunar and lunisolar calendars used across many cultures, including the Islamic, Hebrew, Hindu, and Chinese calendars.
A lunar year (12 synodic months ≈ 354.37 days) is about 11 days shorter than a solar year (365.25 days). Over time this difference accumulates: after 30 solar years you are roughly 31 lunar years old. The faster you age in lunar terms, the more the two systems diverge.
In the traditional East Asian reckoning, a baby is counted as age 1 at birth (having spent approximately a year in the womb) and gains a year on every Lunar New Year, not on their birthday. So a child born one day before the Lunar New Year is considered age 2 the next day. This calculator shows the approximate value (complete lunar years + 1); the precise figure depends on lunisolar calendar dates.
