How does this calculator work?
LV mass (g) = 0.8 × {1.04 × [(IVSd + LVEDD + PWd)³ − LVEDD³]} + 0.6; LVMI = LV mass ÷ BSA. Normal LVMI is ≤ 115 g/m² for males and ≤ 95 g/m² for females (ASE 2015). Measurements require echocardiography; clinical interpretation must be done by a cardiologist.

How this is calculated
Left ventricular (LV) mass is the weight of the muscular wall of the left ventricle — the main pumping chamber of the heart. When the LV is subjected to chronically elevated pressure (as in hypertension) or volume (as in valvular disease), it remodels and hypertrophies, which independently predicts cardiovascular events including heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Indexing LV mass to body surface area (BSA) corrects for body size, producing the LV Mass Index (LVMI).
The ASE-recommended Devereux formula calculates LV mass from three measurements taken at end-diastole on echocardiography: the interventricular septum thickness (IVSd), the LV internal diameter (LVEDD), and the posterior wall thickness (PWd), all in centimetres. The formula is LV mass = 0.8 × {1.04 × [(IVSd + LVEDD + PWd)³ − LVEDD³]} + 0.6. BSA is calculated using the DuBois formula: 0.007184 × weight(kg)^0.425 × height(cm)^0.725.
The ASE 2015 guidelines (Lang et al.) classify LVH severity: for males, mild 116–131 g/m², moderate 132–148 g/m², severe > 148 g/m²; for females, mild 96–108 g/m², moderate 109–121 g/m², severe > 121 g/m². Relative wall thickness (RWT = 2×PWd/LVEDD) distinguishes concentric (RWT > 0.42) from eccentric geometry, which has prognostic implications. Measurements must be obtained and interpreted by a trained echocardiographer.
Frequently asked questions
The most common cause is chronic hypertension, which forces the LV to pump harder, causing the muscle to thicken. Other causes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, valvular disease (especially aortic stenosis), and elite athletic training (physiological LVH). Treatment is directed at the underlying cause.
RWT = (2 × posterior wall) ÷ LVEDD. It classifies LV geometry: normal LVMI with high RWT is "concentric remodelling"; elevated LVMI with high RWT is "concentric hypertrophy" (worst prognosis); elevated LVMI with low RWT is "eccentric hypertrophy" (often volume overload).
The Devereux formula requires measurements only obtainable by echocardiography — you cannot estimate them from symptoms or clinical exam alone. This calculator is intended to assist clinicians and students interpreting echo reports, not for self-diagnosis.
