Magic Number Calculator — Days to Goal Weight

Find your personal "magic number": the number of days it will take to reach your goal weight given a daily calorie deficit, using the widely-used 7,700 kcal-per-kilogram fat estimate.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Your "magic number" = (kg to lose × 7,700 kcal) ÷ daily calorie deficit. Losing 10 kg at 500 kcal/day deficit takes roughly 154 days (22 weeks). The 7,700 kcal/kg estimate is a widely-used rule of thumb; actual progress slows over time due to metabolic adaptation and water-weight fluctuations.

Formula
Days = (weight to lose × 7,700 kcal/kg) ÷ daily calorie deficit
How this is calculated

The central idea is that burning (or creating a deficit of) roughly 7,700 kilocalories results in approximately 1 kilogram of fat loss. This is the Wishnofsky rule of thumb, derived from the energy content of human adipose tissue (~38 MJ/kg ≈ 9.4 kcal/g for pure fat, adjusted for the water and protein content of real body-fat tissue). It is a widely used estimate for planning purposes.

To find your "magic number" of days: first calculate the total energy that must be created in deficit — the difference between current and goal weight in kilograms multiplied by 7,700 kcal. Then divide that by the daily calorie deficit (how many fewer calories you eat than you burn each day). For example, to lose 10 kg at a 500 kcal/day deficit: (10 × 7,700) / 500 = 154 days, or about 22 weeks.

Important limitations: the 7,700 kcal/kg rule assumes all lost weight is fat, but real weight loss also involves water, glycogen, and some lean mass — especially at first. As you lose weight, your total daily energy expenditure decreases (metabolic adaptation), so the deficit naturally shrinks over time and progress slows. The formula gives a useful planning target rather than a precise guarantee. A sustained deficit of 300–500 kcal/day is generally recommended as safe; deficits above 1,000 kcal/day should only be undertaken with medical supervision.

Frequently asked questions

One kilogram of body fat contains roughly 7,700 kcal of stored energy, accounting for the water and protein content of real adipose tissue (pure fat is ~9 kcal/g, but body fat tissue is ~77% triglycerides plus water and protein). The 3,500 kcal/lb (US customary) is the same ratio: 3,500 × 2.205 ≈ 7,717.

For most adults, a 300–500 kcal/day deficit produces a healthy rate of loss of about 0.3–0.5 kg/week. Deficits above 750–1,000 kcal/day increase the risk of muscle loss and nutrient deficiency, and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

The formula assumes constant deficit and all loss from fat. In reality: early losses include water/glycogen (faster at first); metabolic adaptation reduces your calorie burn as you lose weight (slows progress); and daily variation in intake and output means the exact deficit fluctuates. Treat the result as a target, not a guarantee.
