How does this calculator work?
List your food items and calorie counts (one per line, e.g. "Chicken 165"). The calculator sums them, divides your daily target by meals per day to set a per-meal budget, and shows how much of your daily allowance remains. Calorie values must be looked up from a food label or database.
Formula
How this is calculated
Enter each food item on its own line in the format "Food name calories" — for example "Chicken breast 165" or "Apple 95 kcal". The calculator sums all the calorie values to give the meal total. It then compares this to a daily calorie target — either one of the preset values (1 500 kcal for weight loss, 2 000 for maintenance, 2 500 for muscle gain) or your own custom target.
The daily target is divided by the number of meals per day to give a per-meal budget. If this is your only meal for the day, set meals to 1. The remaining-today figure is the daily target minus the current meal total — negative means you have gone over for the day based on this meal alone.
Calorie values in this calculator are user-supplied. Use food package labels, a verified food-composition database (e.g. USDA FoodData Central, Cronometer), or your dietitian's figures for the most accurate counts. Calorie needs vary by age, sex, height, weight, activity level and health status — the preset targets are rough population averages, not personalised recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
The most accurate source is the product's nutrition label. For unpackaged foods use a food database: USDA FoodData Central (fdc.nal.usda.gov), Open Food Facts, or apps such as Cronometer or MyFitnessPal. Values for restaurant meals are estimates — portions vary.
The U.S. Dietary Guidelines 2020–2025 suggest around 1 600–2 400 kcal/day for adult women and 2 000–3 000 kcal/day for adult men, depending on age and activity. Use a TDEE calculator for a personalised estimate.
Dividing your daily target equally across meals gives a simple per-meal budget — e.g. 2 000 kcal ÷ 3 meals ≈ 667 kcal/meal. Many people naturally eat more at lunch and dinner than at breakfast. Total daily intake matters more than strict per-meal targets for most goals.
