How does this calculator work?
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. Timesheet shortcuts: 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.50 h, 45 min = 0.75 h. Enter hours and minutes separately to get the decimal result used in payroll, billing and scheduling.

How this is calculated
When recording work time or billing hours, payroll and invoicing systems almost always require a single decimal number rather than the HH:MM format shown on a clock. The conversion is a single step: divide the minutes part by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. Because 60 is the base of the sexagesimal time system, dividing minutes by 60 produces the fractional part of an hour — so 30 minutes becomes 0.5, 15 minutes becomes 0.25, 45 minutes becomes 0.75, and so on.
Common timesheet conversions are easy to memorise: 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.50 h, 45 min = 0.75 h. Any other minute value can be looked up here instantly. The calculator also gives decimal days (divide decimal hours by 24) and total minutes and seconds for reference.
Going back from decimal hours to minutes is equally simple: multiply the decimal fraction by 60. For example, 0.67 hours × 60 = 40.2 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Decimal hours make arithmetic easy: multiply by your hourly rate to get pay, or add multiple entries directly. HH:MM addition and multiplication require base-60 arithmetic, which is error-prone. For example: 1.5 h × $20/h = $30.00 is simpler than 1:30 × 20.
45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. So 45 minutes = 0.75 of an hour. Similarly: 30 min = 0.50 h, 15 min = 0.25 h, 20 min ≈ 0.333 h.
7 + 48/60 = 7 + 0.8 = 7.8 hours.
