How this is calculated

A mixing ratio describes how much of one substance is present relative to another. It is expressed as "A : B", meaning for every A units of the first component there are B units of the second. The simplest representation divides both sides by the greatest common divisor of their scaled integer equivalents, giving the smallest whole-number ratio that preserves the proportion. For values that do not reduce to neat integers (e.g. 1.5 : 2.7), the calculator also shows the decimal ratio A ÷ B as a cleaner reference.

Percentage shares are computed by dividing each component by the sum of both. These tell you what fraction of the finished mixture each component makes up, which is useful when you need to scale a recipe, blend, or formulation up or down while keeping the proportions constant.

The calculator is unit-agnostic: you can enter volumes (mL, L, fl oz), masses (g, kg, lb) or abstract "parts" — as long as both inputs share the same unit, the ratio and percentages are correct. Common uses include two-stroke engine fuel-oil mixes, epoxy resin hardener ratios, paint thinning, concrete mix designs, and solution preparation in chemistry.

Frequently asked questions

A 1:4 ratio means 1 part of Component A to 4 parts of Component B. In a 5-litre batch, that is 1 litre of A and 4 litres of B. Percentage-wise, A makes up 20 % of the mixture and B makes up 80 %.

Divide the desired total by the sum of the ratio parts to find one "part", then multiply each side. For a 1:4 ratio in 10 litres: one part = 10 ÷ 5 = 2 L, so use 2 L of A and 8 L of B.

This calculator handles exactly two components. For three or more, apply it pairwise (first mix A and B in the desired ratio, treat the combined mixture as one component, then mix with C) or note the ratio as A : B : C by dividing all three amounts by their GCD.
