How does this calculator work?
mass (g) = volume (mL) × density (g/mL). Water has a density of 1 g/mL so 1 mL = 1 g; flour is ~0.53 g/mL; sugar ~0.845 g/mL; honey ~1.42 g/mL. Select the substance from the list or enter a custom density. The calculator also converts mass back to volume.

How this is calculated
Volume and mass are different physical quantities linked by density: mass = volume × density. Pure water at 4 °C has a density of exactly 1 g/mL, making mL and g interchangeable for water — which is why the relationship "1 mL = 1 g" is often memorised. For every other substance the density differs, sometimes substantially. All-purpose flour is around 0.53 g/mL (it traps a lot of air), honey is around 1.42 g/mL (it is denser than water), and table salt packs to about 1.22 g/mL.
In cooking, recipes in North America typically specify volumes (cups, tablespoons, mL) while European recipes often use mass (grams). Knowing the density lets you switch between the two, which is especially important in baking where the mass of flour or sugar governs the final texture. The densities listed here are representative values at room temperature (~20 °C); brand, sifting, packing level and moisture all introduce small variations. For precision baking, weighing ingredients directly is more accurate.

Frequently asked questions
All-purpose flour has a density of about 0.529 g/mL when unsifted, so 100 mL ≈ 52.9 g. Sifted flour is lighter (around 0.45 g/mL → 45 g per 100 mL). For accuracy, weigh flour rather than measuring by volume.
Only for pure water at 4 °C. The density of water at 20 °C is 0.9982 g/mL — close enough to 1 for most purposes. Other substances differ: olive oil is ~0.91 g/mL, honey ~1.42 g/mL, ethanol ~0.789 g/mL.
Select "Custom density" and enter the substance's density in g/mL. You can find densities in food composition databases (USDA FoodData Central), chemical reference tables, or on product data sheets. Density in g/mL is numerically the same as kg/L or g/cm³.
