How does this calculator work?
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. Add up the current market values of everything you own (cash, investments, property, vehicles), subtract all outstanding debts (mortgage, loans, credit cards), and the result is your financial net worth. The calculator also shows your debt-to-asset ratio and equity percentage.
Formula
How this is calculated
Net worth is the most fundamental measure of personal financial health. You add up everything you own — cash in bank accounts, the market value of investments and retirement accounts, real estate at today's market price, the current resale value of vehicles, and any other valuable assets — then subtract everything you owe — mortgage outstanding balances, car loan balances, credit card debt, student loans, and other liabilities. The result is your net worth, also called your equity or wealth.
Assets should be recorded at current market value, not original cost. A house bought for $200,000 that is now worth $320,000 should be entered as $320,000, and the outstanding mortgage entered separately as a liability. Similarly, a car depreciates, so use a realistic resale value, not the purchase price. Retirement accounts count as assets at their current balance, even though withdrawals are eventually taxed.
Net worth can be negative, which is normal early in life (large student loans, a new mortgage) and simply means liabilities exceed assets at that point in time. The debt-to-asset ratio and equity ratio put the number in context: a 60% debt ratio means liabilities equal 60 cents for every dollar of assets owned. Tracking net worth quarterly is a reliable way to measure whether your financial position is improving over time.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Include the current account balance at market value, even though future withdrawals will be taxed. The pre-tax value is the most common convention for personal net worth calculations.
A commonly cited rule of thumb is that net worth should roughly equal annual salary by age 30, twice salary by 40, and so on — but these are rough guides. What matters more is a consistent upward trend over time.
Only if they have meaningful resale value. Most everyday furniture and electronics are excluded from personal net worth calculations because they are difficult to value and impractical to liquidate.
