How does this calculator work?
NY state income tax for 2024 ranges from 4% to 10.9% across eight graduated brackets; NYC residents add 3.078%–3.876% on top. After the $8,000 NY standard deduction (single), an income of $75,000 carries roughly a 5–6% effective NY state rate. Enter gross income and filing status for a combined federal + state + city estimate.
Formula
How this is calculated
New York applies a graduated (progressive) income tax where only the portion of income above each bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. For 2024, NY state ranges from 4% on the first $8,500 (single filers) up to 10.9% on income above $5 million. The standard deduction — $8,000 for single, $16,050 for married filing jointly — is subtracted from gross income before applying the brackets.
New York City residents pay an additional local income tax ranging from 3.078% (up to $12,000) to 3.876% (above $50,000) on the same taxable income base as the state. Yonkers has its own surcharge and is not included here. NYC non-residents who work in the city are not subject to the city tax.
The federal estimate uses 2024 brackets (10%–37%) and the standard deduction ($14,600 single; $29,200 MFJ). This calculator excludes FICA taxes (Social Security 6.2%, Medicare 1.45%), the Alternative Minimum Tax, tax credits (child tax credit, EITC, etc.), and itemized deductions — all of which can substantially change the actual liability.
Frequently asked questions
NY state uses eight graduated brackets from 4% to 10.9% for 2024. Most single filers earning under $80,650 pay at most 6.25% on their top dollars of income. The effective (average) rate is always lower than the marginal (top bracket) rate.
No — NYC local income tax applies only to city residents (people who live in the five boroughs). Non-residents who commute into the city pay NY state income tax on their NY-source income but are not subject to the NYC resident surcharge.
The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income. The effective (average) rate divides total tax by total income. In a progressive bracket system, income at lower levels is taxed at lower rates — so the blended average is always below the top bracket rate.
