How this is calculated

In physics, work is the energy transferred when a force acts on an object over a displacement in the direction of the force. The relationship is W = F × d, where W is work in joules, F is force in newtons, and d is distance in metres. One newton-metre is defined as exactly one joule — they are the same unit dimensionally — so the conversion factor is simply 1.

Once the work in joules is known, the calculator applies exact conversion factors to produce equivalent energy values: divide by 4.184 for thermochemical calories, by 4 184 for kilocalories (food Calories), by 3 600 for watt-hours, by 3 600 000 for kilowatt-hours, and multiply by 0.737 562 for foot-pounds.

Note that this formula assumes the force and displacement are parallel (or you are entering the component of force in the direction of motion). If the force acts at an angle θ to the displacement, the actual work is W = F × d × cos(θ). Torque is also measured in N·m but is a different physical quantity — it should not be equated to energy without the angular displacement.

Frequently asked questions

No — they measure different things. A newton (N) is a unit of force. A joule (J) is a unit of energy or work. However, one newton-metre (N·m) — a force of 1 N acting over 1 metre — equals exactly 1 joule, because joule is defined as kg·m²/s², which is the same as N·m.

Torque is also expressed in newton-metres, but torque and energy/work are distinct quantities. Torque in N·m is dimensionally equivalent to joules, but converting torque to energy requires multiplying by the angle rotated in radians (Energy = Torque × angle). Use this calculator only when you have a linear force acting over a linear distance.
