Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

To convert any number to millions, divide it by 1,000,000 (move the decimal point 6 places left). Example: 2,500,000 → 2.5 million. The same logic extends: divide by 10⁹ for billions, 10¹² for trillions. It is a pure decimal scale shift — no rounding or approximation needed.

Formula
Millions = Number ÷ 1,000,000 • Billions = Number ÷ 1,000,000,000 • Trillions = Number ÷ 10¹²
How this is calculated

Converting a number to millions is straightforward division: divide the raw number by 1,000,000 (10⁶). For example, 1,500,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1.5 million; 250,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.25 million. You can also move the decimal point six places to the left, which is the same operation.

The "short scale" (standard in the US, UK, and most of the world) defines the major scales as: thousand = 10³, million = 10⁶, billion = 10⁹, trillion = 10¹². To convert between adjacent scales, multiply or divide by 1,000. This calculator shows your number in all four scales at once, which is useful when reading financial reports, population statistics or scientific data that mixes units.

Note that some older European texts use the "long scale" where "billion" means 10¹² rather than 10⁹. This calculator uses the short scale throughout. For negative numbers the signs carry through the division unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Divide by 1,000,000. For example, 5,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 5 million; 750,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.75 million. Equivalently, move the decimal point six places to the left.

There are 1,000 millions in one billion (short scale, 10⁹). So 2.5 billion = 2,500 million. Similarly, 1 trillion = 1,000,000 million.

0.25 million = 0.25 × 1,000,000 = 250,000. Fractional millions are common when reporting large figures such as population, revenue or distances.
