How this is calculated

To order decimals you compare them digit by digit starting from the left — the integer part first, then tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. The first place where two numbers differ decides which is smaller: 0.375 vs. 0.5 both have 0 in the integer part, but 0.375 has 3 in the tenths place while 0.5 has 5, so 0.375 < 0.5. A common mistake is assuming more digits means a larger number — 0.375 has three decimal digits but is still smaller than 0.5 (one digit).

The "aligned" row pads all numbers to the same number of decimal places with trailing zeros, which makes digit-by-digit comparison visually obvious: 0.375 vs. 0.500 — clearly 3 < 5 in the tenths column. Trailing zeros do not change the value; 0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500 exactly.

The number line plots the true positions of each value, making the relative gaps clear. Closely spaced values appear near each other; widely spaced values are far apart.
