Percentage Increase Calculator
Work out percentage increases in two ways: enter an original value and a percentage to find the new (higher) value, or enter the original and new values to find exactly what percentage it rose. Both modes show the absolute amount of the increase.
What to calculate
%
The original value grown by the given percentage
- 1
Convert percent to decimal
25% ÷ 100 = 0.25 - 2
Growth factor
1 + 0.25 = 1.25 - 3
Value after increase
100 × 1.25 = 125
How does this calculator work?
Percentage Increase: New = Original × (1 + p/100); or find p = (New − Original) ÷ Original × 100. Use this to calculate the value after a pay rise, markup, or growth rate — or to determine exactly what percentage something has risen from one value to another.
Formula
How this is calculated
A percentage increase tells you how much a value has grown relative to its original. In the first mode you know the original and the percentage — multiply the original by (1 + p/100) to scale it up. For example, increasing 100 by 25% gives 100 × 1.25 = 125, and the amount added is 25.
In the second mode you know the original and the new value and want the percentage. Subtract the original from the new to get the absolute gain, divide by the absolute original, and multiply by 100. Using the same numbers: (125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%.
Note that percentage increase and percentage decrease are not symmetric inverses. If you increase 100 by 25% you get 125; but to get back to 100 from 125 you need a 20% decrease (not 25%), because the denominator has changed.
Frequently asked questions
Multiply the original value by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). For example, a 25% increase from 100 = 100 × 1.25 = 125.
Subtract the original from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100: (New − Original) ÷ Original × 100.
No. Increasing 100 by 50% gives 150; decreasing 150 by 50% gives 75 — not 100. Percentage changes compound multiplicatively, so they are not symmetric.
