How does this calculator work?

Each digit's place value = digit × 10^position, where position 0 is the rightmost (ones) digit, 1 is tens, 2 is hundreds, and so on. For 3 752: 3 × 1 000 + 7 × 100 + 5 × 10 + 2 × 1. The calculator labels each digit's position and shows the full expanded form.

How this is calculated

Every digit in a whole number has a specific value determined by its position. The rightmost digit sits in the ones place (10⁰ = 1), the next to the left is in the tens place (10¹ = 10), then hundreds (10² = 100), thousands (10³ = 1 000), and so on — each position is ten times larger than the one to its right.

The calculator splits the number into its individual digits, assigns each one a power of 10 based on its position from the right, and shows the digit alongside the value it contributes (digit × place value). Adding all the contributions together reconstructs the original number. This is called the expanded form: for example, 3 752 = 3 × 1 000 + 7 × 100 + 5 × 10 + 2 × 1.

This calculator handles non-negative integers only, up to about 9.9 trillion digits. Decimals and negative numbers are not supported. Decimal place values (tenths, hundredths, etc.) extend the chart to the right of the ones place using negative powers of 10 (10⁻¹, 10⁻²), which is not covered here.

Place value is the value a digit has based on its position in a number. The digit 5 in 500 represents five hundreds (500), while the same 5 in 50 represents five tens (50) — its value changes entirely based on where it sits.

Expanded form writes a number as a sum of each digit multiplied by its place value. For example, 4 206 in expanded form is 4 × 1 000 + 2 × 100 + 0 × 10 + 6 × 1 = 4 206.

Decimal digits (tenths, hundredths, etc.) use negative powers of 10 (10⁻¹, 10⁻²). This tool focuses on whole-number positions. For decimal place values, count positions to the right of the decimal point starting at 10⁻¹.
