Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Total barbell weight = bar weight + 2 × (sum of each plate weight × count per side). A 20 kg Olympic bar with two 25 kg and one 10 kg plate per side weighs 20 + 2×(50 + 10) = 140 kg. Use the kg or lb selector for your gym.

Formula
Total = Bar weight + 2 × Σ (plate weight × plate count per side)
How this is calculated

A barbell is always loaded symmetrically: every plate added to one end must be mirrored on the other end. The total loaded weight is therefore the bar weight plus twice the sum of all plate-weight contributions on one side.

Standard Olympic bars (used in most commercial gyms and all IPF/IWF competitions) weigh 20 kg (44 lb) for the men's bar and 15 kg (33 lb) for the women's bar. Standard non-Olympic bars are typically around 10 kg (20 lb). Plate weight is stamped on each disc — common kg sizes are 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25; common lb sizes are 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5.

The calculator supports kg and lb independently. If you work in a gym that mixes units (plates labelled in kg on a lb bar), convert before entering — for example, a 20 kg plate ≈ 44 lb.

Frequently asked questions

The standard men's Olympic barbell (IWF specification) weighs exactly 20 kg (44.1 lb). The women's bar is 15 kg (33.1 lb). Powerlifting bars and specialty bars (safety squat, hex) vary — check the manufacturer's spec.

Gym plates are always loaded in matching pairs — one on each end — so entering per-side quantities is the most natural way to think about loading a bar. The calculator doubles the per-side total automatically.

Not directly — pick one unit and convert all plates before entering. A 20 kg plate is approximately 44.1 lb; a 45 lb plate is approximately 20.4 kg.
