How does this calculator work?
Room size = table width + 2 × cue length by table length + 2 × cue length. A standard 8-ft table (44 × 88 in) with a 58-in cue needs at least 160 × 204 in (13.3 × 17 ft). Shorter cues reduce the requirement proportionally; add extra buffer for comfort and spectator space.

How this is calculated
Every shot needs a full cue-length of open space behind the cue ball. The minimum room size is therefore the table footprint plus one cue-length on each side — in both dimensions. This gives: room width = table width + 2 × cue length, and room length = table length + 2 × cue length. A standard billiard cue is 57–58 inches (145–147 cm), so an 8-ft home table (44 × 88 in playing surface) needs at least 160 × 204 in — roughly 13.3 × 17 ft.
Using shorter cues reduces the clearance requirement: a 48-in bar cue cuts roughly 20 in from each room dimension, making a tight game room more viable. The calculator lets you enter any custom cue length so you can plan around the exact sticks you own or intend to buy.
These are strict minimums for worst-case rail shots. Many players prefer 6–12 inches of additional buffer per side for comfort, spectator space, and furniture clearance. Local building codes may also specify clear floor areas; always check before committing to a layout.
