How this is calculated

Powerball uses a fixed prize matrix (2024): choose 5 numbers from 1–69 and 1 Powerball from 1–26. The jackpot odds are 1 in 292,201,338 — derived from C(69,5) × 26. There are eight other prize tiers with fixed odds, the best being a $1,000,000 prize for matching all 5 white balls but not the Powerball.

Expected value (EV) is the probability-weighted average payout of all tiers. The calculator applies your combined tax rate to each prize and adjusts the jackpot for the cash-option factor (the lump-sum payment is typically around 60 % of the advertised annuity). It then sums the expected return across all tiers and subtracts the $2 ticket cost to give net EV. The jackpot is almost never large enough to make EV positive after tax — a $1 billion jackpot, 60 % cash option, and 37 % federal tax gives a net jackpot of ~$378 M and a jackpot EV of roughly $1.29 per ticket.

The "any prize" probability reflects a 1 in ~24.9 overall chance of winning something, but the vast majority of wins are $4 prizes. The jackpot probability grows very slowly with multiple tickets — you need roughly 146 million tickets to reach a 50 % jackpot win probability.

After a 37 % federal tax and a 60 % cash-option discount, the advertised jackpot would need to exceed roughly $700 million before EV turns positive — and even then, jackpot splits (multiple winners sharing the prize) and state taxes erode the calculation further.

Powerball advertises jackpots as an annuity paid over 29 years. The lump-sum cash option is typically around 60 % of the headline figure. Because taxes are applied before you invest any remaining winnings, the after-tax lump-sum is often only 37–40 % of the advertised number — a critical input to any EV calculation.

Lottery operators must cover operating costs, retailer commissions, and profit — roughly 35–50 % of revenue. That leaves less than the ticket price in expected prizes. Only when jackpots roll over to extraordinary sizes does EV approach the ticket price, and even then taxes and cash discounts keep it below $2 in most realistic scenarios.
