How this is calculated

Classical probability applies when every outcome in a sample space is equally likely — rolling a fair die, drawing a card from a shuffled deck, picking a ball from an urn. The probability of an event equals the count of outcomes that satisfy it divided by the total count of all possible outcomes. This fraction always lies between 0 (impossible) and 1 (certain); multiply by 100 to read it as a percentage.

The complement, P(not event) = 1 − P(event), gives the chance the event does not occur and is useful when calculating "at least one" scenarios or checking that two mutually exclusive and exhaustive events sum to 1. Odds express the same information in a ratio format: odds in favour are favorable : unfavorable, while odds against are unfavorable : favorable. Bookmakers and poker players often prefer odds to probabilities.

This calculator assumes an equally-likely sample space. If outcomes are not equally probable — for example a biased coin or weighted die — you cannot simply count outcomes and must instead sum the individual outcome probabilities.
