Rabbit Cage Size Calculator — Minimum Space Guidelines
Find the minimum cage or hutch dimensions your rabbit needs to move freely, stand upright and binky comfortably. Based on RWAF (Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund) and House Rabbit Society guidelines: length ≥ 4× body length, height ≥ 3× shoulder height.

How does this calculator work?
Minimum cage: 4× body length long, 1× body length wide, 3× shoulder height tall. For a 45 cm rabbit at 15 cm shoulder height, that is 180 cm × 45 cm × 45 cm (≈ 0.81 m²). These are hard minimums per RWAF/HRS guidelines — more space is always better, and outdoor rabbits should have an attached run.
Formula
How this is calculated
Rabbits are active animals that need sufficient space to perform natural behaviours: binkying (sudden leaps and twists), running, grooming and stretching out fully. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF, 2017) recommends a minimum living space of 3 m² plus at least 2 m² of attached exercise space for a pair of average-sized rabbits. The House Rabbit Society scales the minimum cage length to at least four times the rabbit's body length and the width to at least one body length, ensuring the rabbit can complete a full running stride within the enclosure.
Height is often overlooked: a rabbit must be able to stand fully upright on its hind legs without its ears touching the top of the enclosure, so the minimum height is approximately three times the shoulder height (withers height). This calculator applies all three rules simultaneously.
For multiple rabbits, the required width increases by 50% per additional rabbit as a practical approximation — two rabbits generally need at least 1.5× the single-rabbit width to avoid territorial stress. Always err on the side of more space; these are hard minimums, not targets. Outdoor hutches should be paired with a larger secured run; the minimum 5 m² combined RWAF recommendation far exceeds what a hutch alone can provide.
Note: these figures are guidelines derived from animal welfare organisations and peer-reviewed ethology research (2017 consensus). Local regulations or rescue adoption contracts may specify different minimum sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Different organisations (RSPCA, RWAF, House Rabbit Society, ASPCA) use different reference studies and reflect evolving understanding of rabbit ethology. All agree that most traditional "starter hutches" sold in pet shops are too small. Use the values here as a practical minimum and provide the most space you realistically can.
Ideally yes. The RWAF recommends that hutch-kept rabbits have access to at least 2 m² of secure exercise space in addition to their sleeping enclosure, giving a total minimum of 5 m². Indoor house rabbits should be given several hours of free-roaming time each day in a bunny-proofed room.
Gently stretch your rabbit out in a natural prone position and measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not including the tail). Do not include the tail or ears. A typical adult Holland Lop measures about 35–45 cm; a Flemish Giant may reach 70–80 cm.
