How does this calculator work?
Rabbits carry their young for 28–34 days, with an average of 31 days. Enter the number of days since mating to see progress through gestation, how many days remain until expected birth, and the earliest and latest dates within the normal birth window.
Formula
How this is calculated
Domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have one of the shorter gestation periods among common pets. After a successful mating, the doe (female rabbit) carries her kits for an average of 31 days, with a normal range of 28 to 34 days. Litters born before day 28 are typically premature and unlikely to survive without specialist care; pregnancies beyond day 34 are rare and may indicate a problem requiring veterinary attention.
This calculator counts from the day of mating (day 0) and shows how many days remain until the earliest possible birth (day 28), the expected average birth (day 31), and the latest likely birth (day 34). The progress bar is anchored to the 31-day average.
Note that rabbit pregnancies can occasionally result in false pregnancies (pseudopregnancy), where the doe shows nesting behaviour and mammary development but is not actually pregnant. A vet can confirm pregnancy by gentle palpation from around day 12 onwards. These figures are averages for domestic rabbits; wild European rabbits and dwarf breeds may vary slightly.
Frequently asked questions
The average rabbit gestation period is 31 days, with a normal range of 28 to 34 days. Most litters arrive between days 29 and 32. Births before day 28 or after day 34 are unusual and warrant veterinary advice.
Signs include weight gain, nest-building behaviour (pulling fur to line the nest), and a rounder abdomen. A vet can confirm pregnancy by palpating the abdomen from around day 12 after mating, when the developing kits (marble-sized) can be felt.
Provide a nesting box filled with hay or straw in a quiet, draft-free area at least a week before the due date. Ensure the doe has access to fresh water and a high-quality diet. Avoid unnecessary handling in the final days before birth, and minimise disturbances after the kits arrive.
