How does this calculator work?
Feed an adult dog roughly 2–3% of its body weight in raw food per day (more for puppies, less for seniors). Divide the daily ration into 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bone, 5% liver, and 5% other secreting organ. Adjust by monitoring body condition — these are starting guidelines, not fixed prescriptions.
Formula
How this is calculated
Raw feeding for dogs is built on the observation that a carnivore's natural diet consists of whole prey animals. The two most popular frameworks — BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) and Prey Model Raw (PMR) — both size the daily ration as a percentage of the dog's body weight. Typical starting points are 2–3% for adult dogs at maintenance, 3% or higher for active or working dogs, 5–10% for puppies (who need extra energy for growth) and around 2% for seniors with slower metabolisms.
The classic BARF composition divides the daily ration as follows: 80% muscle meat (including heart), 10% raw meaty bone (providing calcium and phosphorus in roughly the correct ratio), 5% liver (the most nutrient-dense organ and a critical source of vitamin A and B12), and 5% other secreting organ such as kidney or spleen. This ratio approximates the nutritional profile of whole prey and avoids the calcium–phosphorus imbalance that arises if boneless meat is fed alone.
Actual requirements vary considerably by breed, individual metabolism, reproductive status and health condition. Monitor your dog's body condition score (you should feel ribs without pressing hard, and see a waist from above) and adjust the rate up or down by 0.5% increments accordingly. This calculator provides a starting estimate — always transition gradually to raw feeding and consult your vet for animals with health conditions.
Frequently asked questions
A well-balanced BARF or PMR diet with the correct organ/bone ratios should supply most micronutrients. Many raw feeders add fish oil for omega-3s, especially if using land-based proteins exclusively. Blood work every 6–12 months helps confirm nutritional adequacy.
Raw meaty bones (RMBs) such as chicken necks, wings or turkey backs are soft enough for most dogs to chew and digest safely. Never feed cooked bones — cooking makes bones brittle and they can splinter dangerously. Always supervise bone feeding and match the bone size to the dog.
A gradual transition over 1–2 weeks reduces digestive upset. Start with a single protein (e.g. chicken) at 20–25% of the meal replacing kibble, then increase raw while decreasing kibble over several days. Puppies and young adult dogs typically transition faster than seniors.
