How does this calculator work?
Total sabbatical fund = (monthly expenses × duration) + (emergency buffer months × expenses). Shortfall = total needed − current savings. Months to save = shortfall ÷ monthly savings rate. A 6-month break at $3,000/month with a $6,000 buffer needs $24,000 total.
Formula
How this is calculated
A sabbatical fund has two parts: the living-cost portion (monthly expenses multiplied by the number of months off) and an emergency buffer for unexpected costs or a longer break than planned. Typical guidance is to add 1–3 months of expenses as a buffer on top of the calculated living cost — this calculator lets you choose.
The shortfall is how much more you need to save beyond what you have already set aside. Dividing the shortfall by your monthly savings rate gives a timeline — the number of months before you can comfortably start your sabbatical. If you already have enough, the calculator shows your surplus.
This is a cash-only model and does not account for investment returns on existing savings, income from freelance or part-time work during the sabbatical, tax implications of withdrawing retirement funds early, or the opportunity cost of pausing employer pension contributions. For sabbaticals longer than 6 months, consider speaking with a financial planner.
Frequently asked questions
Most people budget 1–1.5× their normal monthly expenses during the sabbatical (travel or projects can push costs up) and add a buffer of 1–3 months. A 6-month sabbatical at $3,000/month with a 2-month buffer requires $24,000.
This calculator uses a simple cash model. If your savings are in a high-yield account or investment portfolio, your actual timeline may be shorter — but only by a few months for realistic time horizons and interest rates. For a rough plan, the simple model is usually sufficient.
Employer contributions pause if you stop working, and you lose months of tax-advantaged compounding. Some people choose to make voluntary contributions from savings during the break to stay on track. Check your plan rules before you start.
