How does this calculator work?

Enter a date and hemisphere to find its astronomical season. The tool locates the equinox/solstice window containing the date, then reports the season name, days into it, days remaining, and percentage progress. Northern boundaries are Mar 20, Jun 21, Sep 22, and Dec 21; southern seasons are reversed.

How this is calculated

You provide a calendar date in YYYY-MM-DD format and choose a hemisphere. The calculator compares your date against the approximate astronomical season boundaries, which mark the equinoxes and solstices.

For the Northern Hemisphere the boundaries used are Spring on March 20, Summer on June 21, Autumn on September 22, and Winter on December 21. The Southern Hemisphere experiences opposite seasons, so the same calendar boundaries map to the reversed season names (March 20 begins Autumn in the south, and so on). The tool sorts boundaries spanning the prior, current, and next year so that a December or early-January date is always placed in the correct window.

Once the containing window is found, days into the season is the difference between your date and the season start, days remaining is the difference up to the next boundary, and progress is days-into divided by the total season length times 100. These are approximations: true equinox and solstice instants vary by a day or so each year because the tropical year is not exactly 365 days, and this tool uses fixed UTC calendar dates rather than the exact astronomical moment.

Frequently asked questions

Equinoxes and solstices shift by roughly a day from year to year because Earth's orbital year is about 365.25 days. This calculator uses fixed reference dates (e.g., June 21) rather than computing the exact astronomical instant, which can differ by up to about a day.

When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun (summer), the Southern Hemisphere tilts away (winter). The same calendar boundaries therefore correspond to opposite seasons, so June 21 begins winter in the south.

It uses astronomical seasons defined by the equinoxes and solstices. Meteorological seasons instead start on the first of March, June, September, and December and are not used here.
