Step by step
  1. 1

Convert input to EU (Paris-point pivot)

    9 + 33 = 42
  2. 2

    US Men's equivalent

    EU − 33 = 42 − 33 = 9
  3. 3

    Approx. foot length

    (EU − 2) × 2 ÷ 3 = (42 − 2) × 2 ÷ 3 = 26.7 cm
The shoe last is typically ~10 mm longer than the actual foot.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

EU = US Men's + 33, EU = US Women's + 31, EU = UK + 33.5. Foot length in cm ≈ (EU − 2) × 2/3. Japanese Mondopoint equals foot length in cm. All conversions are ±0.5–1 size approximate because US/UK (barleycorn, 8.47 mm) and EU (Paris point, 6.67 mm) scales grow at different rates.

Formula
EU = US Men's + 33 • EU = US Women's + 31 • EU = UK + 33.5 • foot (cm) ≈ (EU − 2) × 2/3
How this is calculated

Shoe sizing systems use different base units. The US and UK systems use the barleycorn (⅓ inch ≈ 8.47 mm): UK size 0 is defined as a shoe last of about 7⅔ inches; US Men's sizes start half a size higher than UK. The EU system uses the Paris point (⅔ cm ≈ 6.67 mm) — each EU size represents one Paris point of last length, so sizes grow more slowly than US/UK sizes, explaining why the offset between systems shifts with size.

This calculator uses the most widely cited fixed offsets: EU = US Men's + 33, EU = US Women's + 31, and EU = UK + 33.5. Approximate foot length is derived as (EU − 2) × 2/3 cm, accounting for the standard last allowance of roughly 10 mm. Japanese Mondopoint sizes are simply foot length in cm to the nearest 5 mm.

Because the US/UK barleycorn increment (8.47 mm) differs from the EU Paris-point increment (6.67 mm), a single fixed offset cannot be perfectly accurate across all sizes — expect ±0.5 to 1 size variation, and always try shoes on when possible. Brand lasts also vary considerably from nominal size.

Frequently asked questions

The US Barleycorn increment (8.47 mm per size) and the EU Paris-Point increment (6.67 mm per size) differ, so the offset between the two scales is not constant across all sizes. A fixed offset of +33 is a consensus approximation; actual labels can differ by ±1 size depending on manufacturer, country, and the size range.

Yes — US Men's and Women's share the same Barleycorn scale, but women's sizes are shifted by about 1.5 sizes. A US Men's 8 corresponds roughly to a US Women's 9.5.

Mondopoint (used in Japan and some international standards) expresses foot length directly in millimetres or centimetres. It is the most anatomically meaningful system because it measures the actual foot, not a shoe last. Convert by measuring your foot from heel to longest toe.
