Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Add daily sugar from drinks, snacks, and meals. AHA 2023 limits: women 25 g/day (6 tsp), men 36 g/day (9 tsp), children under 25 g/day. Sodas and flavoured beverages are usually the largest single source — cutting them typically has the biggest impact on daily intake.

Formula
Total sugar (g/day) = Sugar from drinks + Sugar from snacks + Sugar from meals • 1 teaspoon ≈ 4.2 g
How this is calculated

"Added sugar" means sugars and syrups added to foods during processing or preparation — table sugar stirred into coffee, high-fructose corn syrup in soda, honey on yogurt. It does not include naturally occurring sugars in whole fruit or plain dairy. Excess added sugar is linked to higher risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and tooth decay.

The American Heart Association (2023 guidelines) recommends that adult women consume no more than 25 g (about 6 teaspoons) and adult men no more than 36 g (about 9 teaspoons) of added sugar per day. Children aged 2–18 should stay under 25 g/day and ideally below 12 g/day. These figures are editable estimates — national guidelines vary slightly and may be updated over time.

The biggest source of added sugar in most Western diets is sugar-sweetened beverages (sodas, flavoured coffees, energy drinks, juices with added sugar). Reducing or replacing these with water, plain sparkling water, or unsweetened drinks is typically the single most effective way to cut intake. Nutrition labels in most countries now list added sugars separately from total sugars, making it easier to track.

Frequently asked questions

Total sugar on a nutrition label includes naturally occurring sugars (e.g. lactose in milk, fructose in fruit) as well as added sugars. Health guidelines focus on added sugar because natural sugar in whole foods comes packaged with fibre, vitamins, and water that slow absorption. This calculator is specifically for added sugar.

Check the nutrition facts label — many countries (including the US since 2020) require "Added Sugars" to be listed below "Total Sugars" in grams. For packaged items without a label, free nutrition databases (USDA FoodData Central, OpenFoodFacts) list added-sugar content per serving.

No — this calculator is for added sugar only. Whole fruit is not a concern: its fibre slows absorption, and the evidence does not link moderate fruit consumption to metabolic harm. 100% fruit juice is more borderline because the fibre is removed and sugar is concentrated.
